It's useful when you call someone stupid in three words to get at least two of the words right (she's so dumb). Palin is a disgrace, but the bigger rubes are McCain for having selected her as VP, and her ardent supporters. She might have appeal as a down-to-earth person, but clearly lacked the cred and was in way over her head.
